What is Clogging?
Clogging, which is also called "Hillbilly Tap Dancing", is an authentic form of American folk dance. It began in the Appalachian Mountains in the mid 1700's by the Irish, Scottish, English, and Dutch-Germans. When the folk dances of each of these were combined, clogging as we know it today, was born.
Clogging is normally done as a precision dance and is choreographed to upbeat music of any genre. Contrary to popular belief, cloggers do not wear wooden shoes. Instead, leather soled shoes with metal taps on the toes and heels, are worn. The taps are made up of two plates that are loosely joined together which strike each other with each step.
Almost anyone can learn to clog. It is a great deal of fun, helps coordination and balance, increases endurance and strength, is a great stress reliever and provides a terrific aerobic workout.
